Education & Career

John Deal’s career doesn’t trace a single straight line—and that’s exactly what makes his perspective valuable. He brings a background spanning corporate restructuring, private equity, and commodities, giving him a genuinely broad view of financial markets, investment strategies, and capital deployment that most advisors in his space haven’t developed. Early in his career, he did the kind of foundational analytical work that shapes how someone actually thinks: evaluating investments, conducting market research, assessing risk, contributing to data-driven decisions in demanding commercial environments. That grounding in the fundamentals never really left him.

It shows up today in how carefully he constructs a deal thesis, how methodically he manages the process from introduction to close, and in the consistency of his preparation across every engagement. His path eventually led to Houston, where he now operates as an independent dealmaker and capital markets professional serving middle-market clients across the country and across borders.

John founded and led Pactum Holdings as an independent sponsor, focused on acquiring and managing critical infrastructure construction and technical services companies. The firm worked across demanding sectors including mining, oil and gas, heavy industrial, manufacturing, fabrication, and government contracting. Running an independent sponsor platform is serious work—sourcing deals, structuring transactions, managing portfolio relationships, maintaining investor relationships largely under your own steam, with limited infrastructure to lean on. John spent five years doing exactly that, and the deal instincts it built are evident in how he approaches capital markets work today.

John served as Chief Executive Officer of WayStride, an early-stage company based in Pittsburgh, where he led the company’s operations during its early growth phase.

Over five years at Kerr Engineered Sales Company, John built commercial relationships across industrial and energy sectors throughout the Greater Pittsburgh region. This role deepened his working knowledge of the capital-intensive, operationally complex businesses he would later evaluate and advise as an investor and capital markets professional.

John began his professional career as a financial analyst at Jones Lang LaSalle, where he developed foundational competencies in investment evaluation, market research, and financial analysis. He gained hands-on experience assessing risk, identifying opportunities, and contributing to data-driven decision-making in a rigorous commercial environment. It was the beginning of the analytical discipline that still defines how he works.
